Bucks & Hammer Formers

Bucks are used in many industries and are basically tooling which help create complex shapes in a variety of materials. In the classic automotive industry, they are generally used to help a metalworker to create the bodywork for vehicle. The buck is a point of reference to help guide the metalworker when creating body panels. Using a buck will speed up the metalworkers work, which save money, but most importantly, it improves the accuracy of the work. Meccanica Engineering have experience in creating section (or egg crate) bucks, some of which incorporate hammer formers. Like the name suggests, hammer formers are directly used to help shape the metal by hammering over them. Hammer formers therefore tend to be made for complex areas of the bodywork, such as around headlights and grill surrounds. They tend to be made of tough materials like Model Board or Nylon.

A buck is a tool, and our process revolves around working closely with the metal worker who will be using the tool. We typically have discussions with the metal working and go through their requirements. Although we have much knowledge of the subject, we don’t make any assumptions, this way the end result meets the metal workers requirements and the end result will be as intended,

The important thing to remember, is that the this technology and way of working compliments traditional methods. It is generally agreed amongst car builders that using a body buck does not take anything away from the traditional handmade aspect of the traditional techniques, it actually compliments them. The metal worker will be able to complete the job using traditional methods in the knowledge that the result will be accurate to the design. We have many years of knowledge and experience of working with some of the most prestigious and valuable models from Ferrari, Jaguar, AC, Porsche and more.

You may only require us to help with the creation of the buck and formers, but it’s worth noting that we can help with actually forming the metalwork as well. We work very closely with one of the country’s finest metalwork craftsmen, which means we can see a project from start to finish for you. Because we have worked together on many projects over the years, we both know the constraints and requirements of the entire process, so get things done quickly and accurately.
